Art on Greene Street
Michelle, Chloe, and I got to have a peek today at an art exhibit that opens Thursday 3/26 at 112 Greene Street, just a few doors down from Naked HQ.
Tons of different artists have taken over the basement studio at 112 Greene, each staking out bits of the floors, ceilings, and walls to paint on. It’s less an art installation, and more a massive bespoke work of art. The artists have been working for the last seven or eight weeks to create art that are unique to the space.
This space is the former home to one of the first conceptual art galleries — 112 Workshop — giving attention to artists like Joseph Beuys, Philip Glass, and Richard Serra way back in the day.
The artists are some of the same folks who arted up the candle building a little while back, by the way, before it became unaffordable condos. You can see some of the works in progress here on Martha Cooper’s blog.
The end result is a little overwhelming and pretty amazing:
Its only failing is that it sometimes feels like you’re in the middle of a turf war. Only a handful of the artists acknowledged the adjacent works of art. My favorite bits of the room are where they do — even small nods, like a bit of latticework easing the transition from one piece to the next, make certain sections of the room really come together. The rest of the room consists of amazing works of art, no doubt, but each exists on its own.
