Be Kind Rewind - we made a movie!

“In the ‘Be Kind Rewind’ exhibition, a collaboration between film director Michel Gondry and the Deitch Projects gallery in New York City, participants are given cameras, costumes, props and sets to create their own movies. The project grew out of Gondry’s latest film, “Be Kind Rewind,” about video store workers who accidentally erase all the movies in the shop and decide to remake them themselves, which they call ‘ sweding’.

Gondry encourages people who want to participate in the exhibition to gather a group of friends, make an appointment (by sending an email to bekindrewind@deitch.com), and then spend about two hours making a film.” - Click for Story

On Friday, some of us from Naked walked over to the gallery space to film our very own movie. It was sick, we walked in, were greeted by some cute girls, and directed upstairs to the first workshop. The purpose of the first workshop is to come up with an idea for the movie, and title. There you are also briefed on the different rooms you can film in, and how this whole thing works out, with time limits etc.. After that, you are directed downstairs to workshop #2. Here you have to write down what happens in each scene, the actions, and who the characters will be. you also have to give every character a name. There are art supplies from paint to crayons to string, glue, markers, scissors, etc. to make narrative cards and to design your VHS box for the movie, to sit on a shelf in the front of the space which is designed just like a movie rental store. After the 2 workshops, the real fun begins. You head back upstairs where you’re given a camera. There is no editing provided meaning you only get 1 take because right when you finish your movie, it is screened on a plasma TV in their screening room located at the front of the gallery. As the space is open to the public, you have people walking around taking photos and playing with the props, but then you will have a group filming a movie at the same time. As you can imagine, there is a lot of creative energy going around in this place. Props to Deitch and Michel for bringing so much fun to the public. I honestly felt like i was in school again, or at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Can’t beat interactive spaces where one is allowed to create. Hey, they rule! You can go check out our movie titled “A Room With No View” currently showing at the Deitch Gallery. - February 16 — March 22, 2008 - 18 Wooster Street, New York
