If you read a bunch of stuff that makes you feel compelled to compete (trade pubs, etc), I think it hinders your output. And if you consciously try to expose yourself to diverse things so your ideas will be better, that can be disappointing as well, because you're seeing these brand new things as a means to an end, and not simply appreciating them for what they are. I guess what I'm trying to say is that while you can make a concerted effort to expose yourself to more diverse things, it won't really have a major effect on your thinking unless you truly appreciate them for what they are, not what they can do for your ideation. sorry, that was very theoretical. I have a Harry Potter example to back this up, though. oh - and I read a lot of childrens books, because I love them, but I think if you want to break away from all the humdrum adult stuff, that's an easy start.
