it’s not about us!

Another example of how self-congratulatory we in the marketing industry can be...

We went to a pre-launch presentation for Firebrand on Tuesday morning. (It will likely be the subject of a future post, but in the meantime, have a read about what Joseph Jaffe and AdRants have to say about Firebrand and that presentation.)

The presentation was held at the Paley Center for Media as a part of Advertising Week. Coffee and breakfast in the lobby before the presentation. And there, just off the lobby, was an exhibit sponsored by (curated by? thought up by?) K+B:

next 20 again

“How do you expect brands to communicate with you in the next 20 years?”

Umm… Who cares?

It’s Advertising Week, so I guess we have to expect a decent bit of navel-gazing. But this seems above and beyond the call of duty.

It’s not about how brands will communicate in 20 years; it’s about how consumers will communicate. And once brands understand that, only then can those brands can attempt to make meaningful connections with consumers. It’s not about brands or marketers! Friends, IT’S NOT ABOUT US!

Okay, now that I’ve gotten that off my chest… At the end of the day, some of the interviews they did were interesting. (Seriously.) And none more so than the quote from our very own Chuck, who says that in 20 years…

No longer will brands and agencies be able to plan their communications years or even months in advance…. In order to win the future, real-time comms planning will be the way forward.

I don’t know what “real-time communications planning” actually means, but I’m excited about it.

p.s. nice picture, Chuck!

Or perhaps the consumer is in charge of the brand, and we are nothing to do with influence, control or planning.

Maybe the only thing required will be Aikido!
