I HEART NY tee shirts?!

Posted by heron on August 31, 2007

Have you noticed the abundance of New Yorkers wearing “I HEART NY” t-shirts? Not the white shirts, but the new and cool colors that have been released lately. Like purple, green, pink, black and blue. I think I’ve even seen tie dye! I went to eat at “A taste of seafood” in Harlem on 125th two days ago and after, I just walked around, tried to absorb the streets before heading back downtown. Spotted some up there as well. It’s funny how changing the color of the t-shirt sparked something within New Yorkers, yes New Yorkers and not tourists. They are wearing these shirts as fashion, matching them with their sneakers and hats. I don’t watch TV, so were these shirts recently featured in a new music video lately, or did these newly offered colors really spark something within citizens without the help of a celebrity / media? Do I smell a new macro-trend in NY? It might be too early to speak about this, but it is something that I’ve been thinking about with Morticia, who even referred to it as a sign of postmodernism. I mean when you think about it, in the end, they choose to wear that tourist t-shirt for $4 over the typical $30 t-shirt found in retail. No name brand pushing the sales, just a generic tee supported by the strength of a city. Cheers to the person who said “lets offer these in different colors!” - because from what I’ve noticed in the streets, it’s clearly working! On Canal st. they are selling them for $10. In Washington Heights, they are $4, which is where the kid with the blue shirt got his.
