Wrap vs. Burrito
This morning I bought my regular breakfast wrap: tomato, eggs and muenster cheese on a whole wheat wrap. As usual it was delicious, however, while I was enjoying it a debate began to rage. As Pak passed he referred to my “breakfast burrito.” I immediately denied that I was eating a breakfast burrito, politely explaining that a breakfast burrito had peppers, onions, chiles, etc. Pak, denied, suggesting that anything wrapped in a tortilla was actually a burrito.
Soon thereafter I was being yelled at from all directions with burrito haters who were suggesting that there was nothing that made a burrito other than the bread-like substance it was wrapped in. I almost cried.
Then, to make matters worse, Joe sent around this link with a completely absurd definition of burrito: “a flour tortilla rolled or folded around a filling (as of meat, beans, and cheese)”
Since I was hardly given a chance to get a word in between the outpouring of insults I’m left to use this blog to defend myself.
A burrito has some Mexican seasonings and normally includes either rice or beans. Anything else is a wrap (see below for examples).

So there you have it. Please, someone agree with me . . .
a) merriam-webster is anything but “absurd”
b) that’s not the only link that joe’s sending around…
i think a self-centered string of logic can be used to solve this one.
Postulate: I hate all Mexican food, including burritos, but the thing that you were eating, Noah, sounded good to me. so therefore it can’t be a burrito, since those are gross.
Everyone else is wrong. Noah is right. That turkey sandwich with lettuce is CLEARLY not a burrito. It has to be Mexican.
kacy, you know i’m not one to agree with you, but i think you’re right on this time . . .
you’re both crazy. turkey + lettuce + tortilla = a “northeastern” burrito, the little-known but no less tasty cousin to the “southwestern” burrito with more Mexican flavors.
btw we are already on page one of google for “northeastern burrito”

[update] we have since slipped well past page 10. very sad.
It’s sad but true: add eggs to a wrap and it becomes a burrito. While I don’t agree, and think what you ate should be called a wrap, it is most definetly a breakfast burrito you are getting yourself involved with.
Joe, you are mistaken darling. That link you referenced shows my impressive alma mater, Northeastern University, during their annual burrito eating contest. The contest is hosted by Qdoba, which serves Mexican food. I am not making any determinations as to whether what Noah eats is a burrito or wrap, I am neutral. I will always be neutral when it comes to this group. Too many opinions!
I think it was a burritto too. Being here in burrito land, it sounds like a breakfast burrito. I just had one and it had eggs, cheese and green chilis, but you can get it with just eggs and a tortilla..
Little known fact. ‘Wrap’ was a term coined by groumet sandwhich shops so that they could raise the price of a burrito by several dollars. ‘Burrito’ sounds ethnic and vaguely peasant. ‘Wrap’ emotionally identifies with ’shawl’ and as a single food item can garner upwards of 50 or even 500 hundred dollars.
Wikipedia knows.

So, what about calling it “wraprrito”?
Don’t you think it’s got a certain ring to it?
Its like the theory of evolution, first came the burrito then evolved the wrap. So goes to show what came first, the chicken or the egg? Its the same creature, just in 2 different stages. So a wrap technically is a burrito, but just called something different just to sound more appealing to an american crowd.
