search stuff

I spent the morning at the 360i summit. Search is one of those things that has an amazing amount of depth and my knowledge only touches the surface. The speakers talked about everything from the role of search buys/SEO in campaigns to search informed marketing (using search to gain insights). Here were a few especially interesting snippets/numbers:

  • There are 120 million internet users per day (not sure whether that’s just America or worldwide . . . assume it’s worldwide).
  • Of those users, the average number of pages viewed is 145
  • I never really thought about it, but beyond just giving people an opportunity to interact with your site elsewhere, widgets also provide SEO benefits since they often (and should) include valuable links back to the site.
  • Google will only show a maximum of two results per domain. If companies want to push down negative comments from other sites, they may want to buy additional domains.
  • Google can ’sandbox’ a site (not give it full exposure) for over a year, so it’s important to at least get a coming soon page up early and find people to link to it.
  • 60% of Xboxes sold are connected to the internet.
  • Last, but not least, here were the search figures Ask showed: Google (3.6b searches), Yahoo! (1.8b) and MSN (705M). Ask showed something like 955m, but that was across all IAC sites (including evite, iwon, etc.) so I’m not too sure about it . . .

The guy from MSN also showed a demo of photosynth and it was awesome. If you haven’t already seen the demo from TED, here it is for your enjoyment.
