my guilty pleasure
I loved these books when I was a kid. The idea ran full-force into Web 2.0 and found new life. Remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books? Maybe it seems obvious to make a video version of the idea — it seems to keep coming up in brainstorms for our clients — but I hadn’t seen anyone actually do it until recently.
The first one was done for the launch of the new Jeep Patriot, a kind of treasure map sort of thing. The acting is waaay over the top, but they filmed an absolute ton of possible endings and choices, and is consequently moderately entertaining. The adventure part fits the Jeep brand, and the Patriot is (almost) another character in the story.
The second example is Choose Your Own Tube. It’s more home-grown, with lower production values, done by a pair of brothers in Australia, and it’s my guilty pleasure. The brothers film a new 5-min episode every few weeks, ending with three choices for the viewer, and post it on YouTube. They tally the comments emailed or left on YouTube. Then they film the next episode based on the most popular choice. Fun, the actors all have Aussie accents, and they’re easy on the eyes. What’s not to like??
They’re in the second season now, whatever that means, and the episodes aren’t as interesting . Sophmore slump? Here’s the very first episode from the first season…
